Mission Statement: Creating lifelong readers and learners in the Nevada Community.
Our Vision
The goal of Cubs Encouraging Nevadians To Read (CENTR) is to produce successful lifelong readers and learners in our community. However, many students at the high school do not enjoy reading, especially when it's required for schoolwork, because they struggle with reading the text. For example, 21% of Nevada High School students did not score at a level of proficiency on the reading portion of the Iowa Assessments last school year. Change needs to happen in order to help these students be successful. This project addresses the following two areas to make CENTR's goal a reality:
Required content-area reading is better supported through effective reading strategies; however, the teaching of those strategies is virtually nonexistent at the high school level mostly because many teachers are unfamiliar with these kinds of strategies. The CENTR project plans to remedy this situation by equipping high school teachers in all content areas with effective instructional strategies to use for reading in their own content areas.
Providing positive reading experiences for students is another goal of this project. Part of creating positive reading experiences involves coaching teachers on how to use reading appropriately in the content areas, but another is to help students find texts that are relevant and engaging for them inside and outside of required school reading.
The predicted short-term outcomes of CENTR are that students will do their homework, understand what they're reading, improve test scores and improve grades in classes, which all lead to additional benefits for the classroom teachers, school, and community. The predicted long-term outcomes of the project are creating successful lifelong readers and learners.
