Strategies for Art
Graphic Organizer for Vocabulary Instruction. I don't know the official name of the strategy is, but I've used it in a couple of my class. It is intended to be used at the beginning of a unit to introduce vocabulary terms. You will need the following supplies ahead of time:
Procedure:
- a piece of art or music
- a text which gives the vocabulary terms (keep it to 10 or fewer words) with their definitions
- a graphic organizer - one box for each term. Label each box with the terms, but leave students room to write.
Procedure:
- On their own scratch paper, have students describe the piece of art or music as best as they can.
- Have students share some of their descriptions with the rest of the class.
- Give students the text with the terms and definitions and the graphic organizer. Have students read or skim through the terms and definitions. Have students write a description of the same art piece or song for each vocabulary term in the boxes of the graphic organizer.
- Have students share their descriptions.
- Discuss the differences between the first descriptions and second after knowing the vocabulary terms. Discuss which one is better and why.
- As an extension, you could have the students turn their descriptions into an art or music analysis or review.
Below is an example text and graphic organizer I used in Composition with this strategy. We used it as a precursor to their music review assignment. I included a Word document so you could modify it as needed for yourself and a PDF in case things get a little distorted in downloading it.
